10 Easy Tips for Long Flights
Whether you’re traveling for adventure, work, or moving abroad, long flights can be exhausting. Hours in the air, dry air, limited sleep, weird meal times… It’s a lot.
But with the right mindset (and a few small habits), you can make your flight feel less like survival mode and more like a mini self-care retreat in the sky.
Here are 10 tried-and-true tips to help you feel comfortable, calm, and refreshed when you land.

1. Dress comfortably and in layers
Airplane temperatures change constantly, and the air-conditioning from above can easily feel too strong. Wear something breathable, soft, and easy to move in. Like for example leggings, a hoodie, and cozy socks. Layers help you adjust when it gets too warm or too cold. I always bring a cardigan or a scarf. It doesn’t just keep me warm, but it’s also cozy and can even double as an extra neck pillow.
2. Stay hydrated
Airplane air is super dry. Bring a refillable water bottle and sip regularly throughout the flight. Most airports have free water refill stations, so you can fill your bottle again after security. Avoid too much coffee or alcohol, because they’ll dehydrate you faster.
3. Bring small comfort essentials
Lip balm, hand cream, toothbrush, a small face mist, and maybe a sleeping mask – these little things make a big difference in how fresh you feel. The best tip I ever got was to bring a toothbrush. Just brushing your teeth after a long flight can honestly feel like taking a fresh shower.
4. Prepare your entertainment
Download your favorite movies, playlists, podcasts, or a few chapters of an audiobook. Long flights are the perfect time to relax and catch up on content you love. Make sure your devices are fully charged and that you’ve downloaded everything you want before the flight.
5. Try to sleep (even a little)
Neck pillows, earplugs, and an eye mask can help. Put your headphones on, choose a quiet playlist or calming sounds, recline slightly, and give your body a chance to rest. Even if you don’t sleep the whole time. And don’t beat yourself up if you can’t sleep! You’ll adjust anyway. If you can’t fall asleep, watch something, read, or plan your trip a bit more. Be kind to yourself.
6. Bring your own snacks
Pack snacks that make you happy: Some bread, fruit, rice crackers, or your favorite dark chocolate. Small comforts matter! I didn’t know this before, but you can always ask for more snacks and soft drinks on long flights. The flight attendants will be happy to help you with anything you need.

7. Move your body to help blood circulation
Every few hours, stand up, stretch, or walk down the aisle. You’ll feel less stiff and it helps your circulation. Even gentle ankle rolls or shoulder stretches at your seat can help. Compression socks can also help with blood circulation. They make you feel less tired and help your legs stay in shape after long flights. My tip is: Put them on in the morning before your flight, when your legs are not swollen from sitting or walking around yet.
8. Create a mini self-care routine before or during your flight
Wipe your face, apply moisturizer, brush your teeth, stretch a little. You can treat it like a small reset. It helps your body and mind feel grounded even mid-flight.
9. Use the quiet time for reflection
Being on an airplane with your phone on airplane mode and not having to respond to anyone can feel strange, but also incredibly freeing. You get to focus on yourself, the movies you want to watch, or the books you want to read. Bring a journal and write down thoughts, dreams, or plans for your trip. Something about being above the clouds makes reflection feel extra peaceful.
10. Adjust to your destination
If you can, set your watch or phone to your destination’s time zone right after boarding. If you’re using a eSIM card, set it up for your destination too. Try to eat and rest according to the new schedule, it’ll help reduce jet lag.
Final Thoughts
Long flights don’t have to feel draining. With a little preparation and a lot of self-kindness, they can actually become a source of calm. It’s a chance to slow down, disconnect, and reset before something new begins.
So next time you fly, pack your essentials, stretch often, and let yourself enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
